We're partnering with a high-growth technology company to find a Director, Brand Communications to lead the next evolution of how the brand earns attention, builds cultural relevance, and shows up in the world.

This is a newly created leadership role with an exciting question at its centre: What's the next story this brand should tell-and how do we build an audience that actively wants to hear it?

The company has built a highly engaged customer community and a strong foundation across earned media, content, events, community programs, and customer storytelling. Now, the opportunity is to put the brand itself more prominently at the centre of the story and significantly expand its cultural presence.

That means thinking beyond traditional corporate communications.

The company is making a significant investment in organic social and wants to build a much larger audience through culturally relevant storytelling. It wants to expand into new forms of media and identify where its stories should show up next-from YouTube and podcasts to creators, independent media, and emerging platforms. It also wants to become more intentional about executive visibility and thought leadership.

On the earned-media side, the goal isn't more coverage for the sake of more coverage. It's greater impact and relevance: identifying the publications and conversations that matter, understanding why the company should be part of them, and finding compelling ways to earn its place there.

We're looking for a modern communications leader who sees earned media, social, creators, community, thought leadership, and culture as interconnected parts of the same brand-building ecosystem.

What You'll Lead

Build a Brand People Want to Follow

  • Define and lead the strategy for significantly growing the company's organic social audience
  • Develop culturally relevant stories and content that give people a reason to engage with the brand beyond its products
  • Build a strong point of view on how the brand should participate in cultural conversations
  • Identify opportunities to make the brand more distinctive, relevant, entertaining, and human
  • Experiment with new formats, ideas, and approaches that push beyond conventional marketing
  • Develop the operating rhythms needed to turn social into a meaningful brand-building engine

Find the Next Places the Brand Should Show Up

  • Develop a modern "new media" strategy spanning opportunities such as YouTube, podcasts, creators, independent media, emerging platforms, and new content formats
  • Continually identify where audiences are spending their time and how the brand can authentically participate
  • Build relationships and partnerships that expand the company's reach and relevance
  • Evaluate opportunities based on audience and brand impact rather than simply chasing impressions
  • Help the organization think more like a modern media and cultural brand

Evolve Earned Media

  • Refine the company's earned-media strategy with an emphasis on quality over quantity
  • Identify the publications, journalists, conversations, and cultural moments that matter most to the brand
  • Expand the company's presence beyond traditional media into more mainstream and consumer-facing conversations
  • Partner effectively with an established external PR agency, providing clear strategic direction and ensuring a high bar for execution
  • Identify compelling stories that make the company relevant to audiences well beyond its existing category
  • Support proactive and reactive communications as needed

Build Executive Visibility

  • Help define and execute a more sophisticated executive communications strategy
  • Identify which executives should own which external conversations and develop distinct platforms around their expertise
  • Build thoughtful social and thought-leadership strategies for senior executives
  • Translate executive expertise into compelling narratives, content, speaking opportunities, and media moments
  • Build trust with senior leaders and earn buy-in for new approaches to executive visibility
  • Develop a deep understanding of individual executive voices and ensure external content feels credible and authentic

Turn Community Into Brand

The company already has a rich ecosystem of customers, community programs, events, content, and experiences. You'll look for ways to connect those assets into a larger brand story.

This may include:

  • Online community programming
  • Loyalty and referral initiatives
  • Customer storytelling
  • Podcasts and original content
  • Customer participation in advertising and brand campaigns
  • Conferences and live experiences
  • Creator and influencer opportunities
  • Unexpected cultural activations

We're looking for someone who sees these not as isolated programs, but as opportunities to create stories, build affinity, and make the brand more culturally relevant.

And you'll have permission to have some fun with it.

This is an organization where an unexpected experiential idea can make its way to the CEO-and where leadership is excited by creative thinking that makes the brand memorable.

Lead & Develop the Team

  • Lead and develop a team of four across the communications function
  • Establish clear priorities, ownership, KPIs, and operating rhythms
  • Create an environment where the team is encouraged to experiment and bring forward ambitious ideas
  • Partner closely with Brand, Marketing, Creative, Product Marketing, and senior leadership
  • Balance big-picture thinking with the ability to turn ideas into executable programs
  • Effectively manage external agency and specialist partners

What We're Looking For

This role is not designed exclusively for a traditional corporate PR leader. We're particularly interested in a modern audience-building communications leader who understands how brands earn relevance today.

You may have come through communications, social, content, brand, earned media, or an integrated combination of these disciplines.

Most importantly, you bring:

  • Significant experience leading communications, audience, social, content, or integrated brand programs
  • A track record of building and growing meaningful organic audiences
  • A strong understanding of social platforms, creators, internet culture, and emerging media
  • Excellent instincts for what makes a brand culturally relevant
  • Strong storytelling and narrative-development capabilities
  • Sophisticated earned-media judgment and an understanding of what makes a story genuinely newsworthy
  • The ability to distinguish meaningful media opportunities from coverage that simply generates impressions
  • Experience partnering with PR agencies and other external partners
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to influence senior leaders
  • Experience developing executive thought leadership, messaging, or social presence
  • The ability to move fluidly between strategy, experimentation, and execution
  • Strong people leadership and experience developing high-performing teams
  • Comfort operating within a fast-moving, high-growth environment

What Will Set You Apart

We'd be particularly excited to meet people who have helped a company evolve from being well known within its category to relevant within a much broader cultural conversation.

Experience within high-growth technology is valuable, but we're equally interested in people who have learned from consumer, marketplace, fintech, media, or culturally relevant brands.

Think about organizations that have built audiences and cultural relevance beyond what their business model might traditionally suggest.

You understand that the goal isn't simply to make more content.

It's to determine what a brand has the credibility to talk about, why anyone should care, and how to turn that point of view into an audience.

The Person Who Will Thrive Here

You're probably not someone who believes a successful communications strategy can be measured by the number of press mentions generated.

You care about influence, relevance, audience, and impact.

You have a pulse on culture. You understand how social behaviour is changing. You're curious about creators and new media. You can sit with senior executives and shape a sophisticated thought-leadership strategy-and then get equally excited about an unconventional event activation or an idea that gets the internet talking.

You're willing to challenge what a technology company's communications function is supposed to look like.

And you're excited by the opportunity to help build a brand that people don't just recognize-they actively choose to follow.
